“Best Wineries of the Regions” + “5 black stars”

Halliday Wine Companion 2021

Appropriately, Bellbrae Estate wines are named after the acclaimed local surf breaks along its world famous Great Ocean Road: ‘Sparrows‘, ‘Boobs‘, ‘Bird Rock‘ and ‘Bells‘.

Originally planted to grapes around 150 years ago by Swiss settlers, at one stage the area from Bellbrae to Geelong and beyond was one of Australia’s largest wine growing regions. For most of the 20th century, however, the land had reverted to grazing but the wonderful climate and the enticing north facing slopes led Bellbrae Estate to plant the first vineyards here for over 100 years – better late than never!

The wines produced at Bellbrae Estate from the 7 hectares of vines all have strong varietal character with excellent flavour intensity.  The flagship Bellbrae Estate wines are the pinnacle of the releases – they exhibit the best of the vineyards plus high levels of care and commitment in the winery.  Quality French oak and traditional winemaking techniques add to the excellence of this range. These wines are wonderfully drinkable now but are all made to benefit from further cellaring.

Bellbrae Estate also produce the Longboard range of wines, which are a true expression of the region with their exuberant flavours and are a great match for the local produce.  Made more to drink now, they are all bursting with freshness and taste, perfect for the relaxed lifestyle loved on the Surf Coast.

Bellbrae Estate ‘Bells’ Syrah 2022 View Tasting Notes

The tannins are silky and balanced, giving this wine structure to cellar well for at least 10 years from vintage. The 2022…

Bellbrae Estate ‘Bird Rock’ Pinot Noir 2022 View Tasting Notes

Another classic from the Bird Rock stable. This Pinot Noir exhibits restraint that builds through the palate with flavours of strawberry, rhubarb and cherry. The fruit is accompanied by dusky wood spices and fine, cedar-like tannins. It is graceful, refined yet has a bit of new school sass thrown in. If you like it fresh and youthful then drink in…

Bellbrae Estate ‘Boobs’ Chardonnay 2022 View Tasting Notes

Local legend has it that the ‘Boobs’ surf break is named after Bobby ‘Boobs’ Johnson, who was given naming rights after being the first person to surf there in the early 1960s. Continuing on from where we left off with the 2021 wine, the 2022 has elegance and fruit drive written all over the first sniff. Lifted aromas of Lime…

Bellbrae Estate ‘Southside’ Sauvignon Blanc 2022 View Tasting Notes

Quinces, lemons  abound on the nose, whilst earthy  asparagus and limes bring a fresh tang to the palate. It is at once expansive and restrained, showing barrel maturation flavors that bring a bit of luxury to its fine-boned structure. The lees stirring in barrel brings a soft, creamy texture to the wine, coupled with a soft oak tannin. Fresh and…
