Bellbrae Estate ‘Bells’ Syrah 2021

96pts + Gold – Halliday Wine Companion

“One-week extended skin contact and matured in a mix of new and older French oak for 12 months. Deep ruby red. Displays blue and black fruits with allspice, licorice and violets. There’s a lot going on! Just as good on the medium-bodied, seamless and long palate. I like the small amount of reduction and you know, as good as this is now, it’s also built to last.” Phillip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion.

The Bellbrae Estate ‘Bells’ Syrah (Shiraz) is named after Bells Beach, the most famous of the Surf Coast’s beaches and home of the Rip Curl Pro, the world’s longest running surfing competition.

Tasting Notes

Our winemaker has always been enamoured with the wines of the Northern Rhone area of France, and this Syrah is soft and supple on the palate. Characters of plum and raspberry are integrated with savoury notes of spice, black pepper and cedar oak. A silky, medium-bodied wine with a deliciously long palate. Maturation in new and one-year-old French oak, balanced with silky tannins give this wine structure to cellar well for about 10 years from vintage.

This Syrah is easy to pair with food, yet so moreish that you will want to keep enjoying it long after your meal. Perfectly suited to the Surf Coast lifestyle.

“95 points + Exceptional” 2017 Vintage

“Hand-picked, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, pressed to French barriques (50% new, 50% 1yo) for 14 months. Has the restraint of ’17 writ large, with spice as much as red fruits providing the flavour base, superfine tannins part of what comes naturally.”
James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2021

“(…) pepper and wood spices go high with cured meats…”

“White pepper and black pudding with blue fruit hints.  Red and blue fruits run the central-palate line, pepper and wood spices go high with cured meats underneath.  Fine tannins are supple but guiding and it carries a lot of presence to the end.”
Stuart Knox, The Real Review, March 2020

Bellbrae Estate

“Best Wineries of the Regions” + “5 black stars”

“The Surf Coast area of Geelong enjoys a slightly milder climate overall than other areas of the Geelong viticultural region. Being so close to Bass Strait, Bellbrae Estate experiences a maritime influence that reduces the risk of frost in spring and provides more even temperature ranges during summer – ideal growing conditions for producing elegant wines that retain their natural acidity.”
