Kay Brothers ‘Hillside’ Shiraz 2017

The Hillside vineyard was initially planted in 1892 and, in 1992 a systematic replanting of the eastern hillside commenced, using cuttings taken from the 100- year-old Block 6 Shiraz and suitably named New Block 6.  Unlike Block 6, Hillside allows Kay Brothers to pick various parcels of fruit so as to assemble the best blend possible.

Rich, ripe array of black fruit flavours, underscored by savoury bacon fat with briary roast beetroot and thyme on the palate.  The firm, yet svelte, tannin structure ensures that this classic McLaren Vale Shiraz is packed with complexity and can only benefit from a few years in the cellar.

“95 points + Exceptional”

“Hillside allows Kays to blend Block 11 (on the exposed tip of the hill with shallow sandy loam over limestone and sandstone, wind and sun keeping the yield low) with the higher yielding New Block 6 (dark chocolate loam and clay), matured in American and French oak for 20 months. An exceptional Kay Brothers wine that has elegance to burn.”

“94+ points”

“If you can’t stretch the budget to Block 6, then Hillside is most often a pretty fair substitute.  Blackcurrant, blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate, discreet cedar spiced oak. It’s full bodied, and full of dark chocolate, roast beef and dried herb, dense in tannin, though not heavy. Finish is very good too, savoury and long. Excellent. Time is on its side.”
Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, September 2018

“Delicious”

“A big mouthful of a wine that never loses its balance, with cocoa, mulberry, eucalypt, leather and spicy fruit all in massive proportions. It’s dry, dense and ripe, with a fair dose of coconut-scented oak plus a strong, muscular core of fruit on the palate that is almost explosive. The tannins are firm and almost rustic, which suits the wine beautifully. Delicious.”
Angus Hughson, The Australian, Wish Luxury Lifestyle Magazine, February 2020

“One of the Best Wineries of the Regions, 5 red stars”
