Rusden ‘Chookshed’ Zinfandel 2015

Winemaker’s comments:
“A sensory overload of aniseed, Mum’s dried fruits, blackcurrant, cedar, ash and raisin, followed by a tsunami of layered fruit and spice with incredible richness and density.  For any Zin lover, this is one for the ages.  A wine full of power and precision that dances so gracefully across the canvas at the same time.  2015 gave us another warm, dry growing season with little rain providing ideal conditions for the mighty Zin.  The added bonus of tiny yields has combined to complete the trifecta of what I consider to be three great vintages of Zinfandel in a row.”

2014 Rusden ‘Chookshed’ Zinfandel

“(…) its Muhammad Ali “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” wine style (…).”

“The Barossa Valley seems like the perfect Australian location to forge exuberantly flavoured, muscled-up versions.  The Canute family, who steer Rusden Wines in the Barossa’s Vine Vale district between Tanunda village and the foothills to the east, has worked with a small block of zin for more than 40 years, and built a name for its Muhammad Ali “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” wine style as well as in its big shiraz and cabernet outings.  “We like to pick our zin big,” says the family winemaker Christian Canute. “We let it raisin-up and give it a liberal dose of new oak.”  The Rusden 2014 Chookshed Zinfandel ($49) punches in at 15.4 per cent alc/volume and shows typical varietal blue and black berry “jam” with raisiny notes, but the beast in the glass has been tamed a little, a faint mint/sage note adding individuality and a chalky texture helping to ground the wine.”
