Printhie ‘Topography’ Chardonnay 2018

“94 points”

“This is a fine chardonnay hewn by a sensitive regime: spontaneous and inoculated ferment on plenty of solids, 50% natural malolactic and no lees stirring, resulting in a nutty, broad chardonnay on attack, boasting a filigreed line of mountain acidity, beautifully handled oak and detailed lees work across the mid-palate to finish. This adds to the  textural composition and energy of the wine, while corralling the abundant stone, toasted nuts and orchard fruit flavours.”

Vineyard

Bantry Grove Farm – 890m

Production

Significant change in barrel selection for fermentation and maturation.  We adopted 500L puncheons instead of 300L hogsheads aiming to keep all the complexity but achieve better integration. Hand harvested, whole bunch pressed, 100% solids in juice, 25% new oak, 50% MLF.

Tasting notes

Mid-straw colour. Highly complex aromas and flavours of bright dark citrus, apple & floral fruit. Background nuttiness and toast from the oak, hints of struck matchstick from the solids. Gentle phenolic length and great persistence.

Wine Analysis

Alcohol 12.7%, pH 3.37, TA 6.3gL, RS 0.9gL

Cellaring potential

Very appealing young and fresh. However, this wine has a great track record of evolving in the cellar for a good decade.
