Leconfield ‘Sydney’ Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

The Leconfield Coonawarra estate was established in 1974 by noted oenologist, Sydney Hamilton who at the age of 76 and a winemaking career spanning nearly 60 years, still yearned to make a classic Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.  Selecting Coonawarra as the region to fulfil his ambitious dream, Sydney began to plant his vineyard and built his winery naming it Leconfield, after an English ancestor, Lord Leconfield.  This wine pays homage to Sydney’s dream.

Reviews & Awards

“95 points + Exceptional”

“A one-off celebration of the 40th anniversary of Leconfield, established by Sydney Hamilson, aged 86 when he planted the first vines and famously advertised for ‘experienced women’ to work in the vineyards, especially during vintage.  This is a suitably rich cabernet, blackcurrant and bay leaf fruit flavours nestled in a bed of new French oak.”
Halliday Wine Companion 2019

“93 points”

“(…). Paterson again approved. “Gorgeous varietal character with snappy red fruits,” she said. “I enjoyed the intensity and elegance. Restrained oak, and fine acidity and tannin. Room to grow.”  The palate is a little richer than its stable-mate, befitting a reserve, while the cooler season brings out cabernet’s varietal leafiness.”
Nick Bulleid MW, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Top Limestone Coast Reds Panel Tasting, Aug/Sept 2018

“93 points”

“A more leafy blackcurrant style of cabernet reflecting the cooler year. Aromatic and raspberry-ish. Fine in the mouth, elegant, with lively acidity and less full-bodied than the two previous Sydneys. A very fine and subtle cabernet.”
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, December 2016
