Flametree ‘SRS Wallcliffe’ Chardonnay 2019

“(…).  Magnificent.”

Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine, October/November 2020

The Flametree Sub Regional Series (SRS) aims to showcase distinctive wine styles from vineyards renowned for growing ultra premium fruit. Winemaker, Cliff Royle, and his team chose to lead with Margaret River’s strongest varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.  The Sub Regional Series represents the very best varietal wines under the Flametree label, these wines will only be made in the best vintages, volumes will be small and availability very limited.

Flametree’s SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay is the most acclaimed and awarded of the SRS range, and considered by many critics as one of Australia’s best Chardonnays, if not one of the world’s best, and often held in the same regard as some of Burgundy’s finest.

Reviews & Awards

2 Trophies – Best White Wine of Show and Best Chardonnay of Show + Gold Medal (98 points)

Royal Adelaide Wine Show 2020

98 points, 5 stars, #1 of 26 2019 Chardonnay from Margaret River”

“Light yellow colour, bright, with a strongly nutty and grapefruity bouquet – invoking new oak and Gingin clone chardonnay. A full-bodied, ample, mouth-filling wine of great presence and generosity. Long, harmonious finish. The grapefruit flavours are concentrated and complex. An utterly superb wine.”
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, August 2020

“98 points, 5 stars, Top New Release Wines”

“Chardonnay is the strong suit at Flametree.  Intense, nutty, grapefruity aromas showing some new oak and a patina of matchstick, then a full-bodied palate of great style and presence.  Long, harmonious finish, seamless texture, great flavour.  Magnificent.”
Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine, October/November 2020

“Halliday’s Top 100 Wines of 2020” and “97 points”

“From a single site, wild-fermented and matured for 10 months in French puncheons (40% new).  Intense white peach and pink grapefruit dance a pas de deux on the long palate, creamy cashew oak nuances beating a rhythm in a perfectly judged support role.”
The Weekend Australian, November 2020

96 points”  “Wow.  So complex and fresh…”

“Wow. So complex and fresh, this is really captivating chardonnay. The nose is so carefully curated to deliver fresh lemons and peaches with subtle, flinty notes, as well as a gently creamy and spicy edge. So nuanced. The palate is the same, offering layers of fresh fruit, some creamy in-fill and a long, persistent stream of succulent, smooth peaches, in elegant and intense mode. Drink or hold.”
JamesSuckling.com, April 2020

95 points”

“A very complex and detailed Chardonnay that combines flinty notes, grapefruit scents and flavours, light nougat-like oak character, green pear and melon fruit characters.  It’s delicious. Drives with energy across the compact, mineral-charged palate, finishes long, mouthwatering and with more of the pulpy grapefruit freshness.  Super expression, modern, elegant and delightful.”
Mike Bennie, WBM, September/October 2020
