Château Picoron Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux AOC Merlot 2015

This exceptional Bordeaux wine is from carefully selected plots on the continuation of Saint-Émilion’s celebrated limestone ridge, the perfect terroir to grow a beautiful 100% Merlot.

Summer 2015 in Bordeaux was flawless.  Warm dry days provided uninterrupted ripening for the Merlot berries, producing a dense, complex wine.  Rich aromas of lightly stewed fruit, truffles and vanilla, layered with creamy tannins unfold into a long mouth-watering finish.

Only 900 cases were produced from the rolling clay limestone hills of Château Picoron.  Aged 14 months in French oak and a further 3 years in bottle.  Ready to drink and will mature up to 2030.

Reviews & Awards

“(…).  Hefty, quite modern, but rich and satisfying.”

“Blockbuster style. Cassis, coffee bean and mint chocolate, some earth/gravel-like character. It’s thick and bold, packed with plum and black fruits, a ferrous character, rolling fat tannin that coats the mouth, bitter chocolate and dried herb, and a fleshy finish of good length. Hefty, quite modern, but rich and satisfying.”
Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, www.winefront.com.au, December 2020

“16/20”  “(…) much more drive than some St-Émilions. (…).”

“Deep crimson – much deeper than Petit Picoron 2015, than which is it much more lifted and complex on the nose.  Sweet start with polished tannins and much more drive than some St-Émilions.  Ambitious with a great charge of well-managed tannins.  Another vigorous wine but with a much longer life ahead.  Quite impressive persistence and lively ripe fruit.”
Jancis Robinson MW, www.jancisrobinson.com

“(…).  A big, brawny, chewy-tannin wine with remarkable power (…).”

“Deep, dark, dense red colour with a good purple tint. The bouquet shows smoky, oaky, creosote and cocoa-powder aromas, with full-body and firm tannin grip that persists. A big, brawny, chewy-tannin wine with remarkable power and grip for a pure merlot. (…).”
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, January 2020

“(…).  The palate has a wealth of richness and approachable fruit flesh.”

“There’s a wealth of rich dark berries here and a thread of dark chocolate, as well as a spicy, cedary influence. The palate has a wealth of richness and approachable fruit flesh. Good value. Drink or hold.”
James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com

“Good quality, deep rich fruit (…).”

“Good quality, deep rich fruit, some delicious damson and chocolate notes.  The high alcohol comes through in terms of its silky and slightly heavy texture but this is well balanced, has plenty of punch.  100% Merlot. Glenda and Frank Kalyk have been owners here since 2015, making this their first vintage.  15.5% abv.  Drink now-2030.”
Decanter

“Perfumed wood and black fruit aromas lead the way in this delicious wine. (…).”

“Perfumed wood and black fruit aromas lead the way in this delicious wine.  It’s rich but still firm, with fine juicy fruit that will come through with time. Packed with tannins, it will be ready to drink from 2021.”
Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, December 2017
