Oz Clarke’s Best Producers in New Zealand 2010

Upper Moutere, Nelson, New Zealand
neudorf.co.nz

Tim and Judy Finn planted their first vines in 1978 on a gentle north facing slope above the Moutere Valley.  The Moutere Hills at the top of the South Island are one of New Zealand’s sunniest spots, but the gravely clay soils retain just enough moisture to support grapevines through the dry summer months without the need for irrigation. Closely planted, low cropped vines combine with Tim Finn’s sympathetic winemaking to create wines of balance, texture and length, and above all, individuality.

Neudorf Vineyards ‘Moutere’ Chardonnay

92 points “(…) lemon curd, peach blossoms and apple tart…” (2010 vintage)
“The 2010 Moutere Chardonnay is youthfully mute with some hints of reduction soon giving way to notes of lemon curd, peach blossoms and apple tart with hints of lightly toasted bread, honeysuckle, cedar and chalk. Medium bodied and elegantly fruited in the mouth, it has a lovely suggestion of creaminess to the texture with crisp acidity and a long finish. Approachable now, it should drink best 2012 through 2017+.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate, Oct 2011

"This wine cements Neudorf's reputation as this country's finest Chardonnay maker. It is intense and very classy." (2007 vintage)
Bob Campbell MW

"Really racy and confident" (2007 vintage)
"Lovely burgundian reduced nose (as opposed to a screwcap reduced nose!).  Smoky.  Quite different from most NZ Chardonnays. Really racy and confident. Well integrated and lovely already though there is sufficient density here to believe in some useful future evolution. (...)."
Jancis Robinson MW, 2009

Neudorf Vineyards ‘Moutere’ Pinot Noir

91 points (2009 vintage)
“Ruby colored, the 2009 Moutere Pinot Noir offers a good intensity of warm cranberry, pomegranate and red currant aromas with hints of violets, damp earth and Ceylon tea. Medium bodied, the concentration of red berry and earth flavors is well balanced with a medium level of finely grained tannins, and refreshing acidity. It finishes long and savory. Drinking nicely now, it should cellar to 2015+.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate, Oct 2011

5/5 stars and 94 points (2009 vintage)
“Reasonably light in colour but with a haunting floral perfume and cherry, red berry and violet flavours with delicately drying and slightly peppery tannins. Supple elegant wine in a bone dry and modern Burgundian style.”
Australian Gourmet Traveller WINE, June/July 2011

4/5 stars (2009 vintage)
Decanter, June 2011

“one of the most Burgundian Pinots outside Burgundy”
Jancis Robinson MW, Financial Times, UK, 2009

“There is none more elegant than Neudorf Moutere Pinot Noir”
“There is none more elegant than Neudorf Moutere Pinot Noir; the dedicated and passionate owners Tim and Judy Finn coaxing the essence and metaphysical “pinosity” out of Pinot Noir, the Antipodean equivalent of Chamboille- Musigny, and currently my favourite wine of this style in the Southern Hemisphere.”
Curtis Marsh, Hong Kong Standard

"Without any doubt, the Neudorf ‘Moutere’ Pinot Noir is the leading example from the Nelson region and ranks alongside the best in the country, such as Ata Rangi, Fromm ‘Clayvin’, Pegasus Bay ‘Prima Donna’ and Felton Road ‘Block 5’."
Raymond Chan, April 2011

Neudorf Vineyards ‘Moutere’ Riesling

5 stars, 94 points (2009 vintage)
“Concentrated riesling in a late-harvest style although fine, fruity, mouth-watering acidity restrains sweetness to give a moderately drying finish.  The fruit was hand-picked and sorted – not to optimise botrytis, but to find clean, healthy bunches.  Layers of citrus, floral, mineral and hints of tree fruit flavours without significant botrytis influence.  It’s a lovely wine with a great future – there is much to be gained from keeping for at least five years.”
Gourmet Traveller Wine, June/July 2011

“(…) superb balance…”, 91 points (2009 vintage)
“The 2009 Moutere Riesling is a medium-sweet, lower alcohol style possessing 47 grams per liter of residual sugar and 9% alcohol. It gives a restrained, moderate intensity of earthy, chalky, musky notes over lemon peel and lime leaf aromas. Effortlessly, invigoratingly sweet, there’s a great line of acid running through the middle contributing superb balance and lingering through the long, steely finish. It should drink best from 2012 to 2017+. ”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate, Oct 2010

“Moutere Riesling continues to drop jaws”
“Neudorf Vineyards is one of the most exciting white wine producers in New Zealand. Neudorf Moutere Riesling continues to drop jaws with a mind blowing combination of purity, sweetness and acidity.”
Matt Skinner, World Top 100 Wines 2010

Neudorf Vineyards ‘Moutere’ Pinot Gris

“(…) subtle apple and pear aromas with a touch of toast. (…)” (2009 vintage)
“The 2009 Moutere Pinot Gris provides subtle apple and pear aromas with a touch of toast. On the lighter side of medium bodied, the off-dry palate presents a little sweetness (12.1 grams per liter of residual sugar), medium-high acid, with good concentration and a creamy texture, finishing long. Drink it now through 2014.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate, Oct 2010

Neudorf Vineyards ‘Nelson’ Sauvignon Blanc

90 points “(…) intense notes of fresh lemon juice, grapefruit peel and green apple slices…” (2010 vintage)
“The 2010 Sauvignon Blanc presents intense notes of fresh lemon juice, grapefruit peel and green apple slices with underlying grass and green bean hints. Medium to full bodied, it has a pleasant silkiness to the texture with very good flavor concentration, lively acidity and a long finish. Drink it now through 2013. ”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate, Oct 2010

Neudorf Vineyards 'Nelson' Chardonnay

“...this is stunning..." (2010 vintage)
“One of my favourite producers of all time in NZ.  Some of the finest wines made in New Zealand come from Neudorf and this is stunning. Dry and sophisticated. Very classy and great value.”
John Hawkesby, RadioNZ

5 stars, "This must be the most complex and powerful Neudorf Nelson Chardonnay to date." (2010 vintage)
"Brilliant, green-hued, straw-yellow with a pale edge, this is youthful in appearance. The bouquet is still tight, but shows real concentration and density, packed with layers of white stonefruits, mealy nutty elements and complex flinty reduction, and nutty oak, very much in a white burgundy style. A full, powerful and concentrated wine on palate, the complex flavour profile of stoneftuits, nuts and flintiness is balanced by subtle oaking. The wine shows sweetness and succulence, enhanced by lively acidity, which carries through to a sustained finish. This must be the most complex and powerful Neudorf Nelson Chardonnay to date. It has the potential to develop and reveal more over the next 4-5+ years. Match with rich poultry, pork and veal dishes. 18.5/20, Five Stars."
Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, July 2011

"...should now be considered one of New Zealand's great..."
"Neudorf Nelson Chardonnay is a stunning Chardonnay which should now be considered one of New Zealand’s great Chardonnays in its own right, not just a second wine to Neudorf’s exceptional Moutere Chardonnay."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit 2011

Neudorf Vineyards 'Brightwater' Riesling

18/20, "An elegant wine with a bright, zesty palate..." (2010 vintage)
"An elegant wine with a bright, zesty palate featuring soft, but concentrated fresh lime and floral flavours enlivened by racy acidity that provides an attractive line and linearity through the palate. The finish is sustained, with nuances of lime fruit, minerals and a steely dryness."
Raymond Chan Wine Reviews

Neudorf Vineyards ‘Tom’s Block’ Pinot Noir

91 points, 4 ½ stars (2009 vintage)
"The wine is beautifully styled as usual, displaying red/black cherry, game, spice and a hint of cedar characters on the nose. The palate is fine and focused with elegant texture and well polished tannins providing a gently firm finish. Lovely poise and frame. At its best: now to 2016."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Sept 2011
