Old Vines – Modern Wines!

Hay Shed Hill is a premier winery located in Willyabrup – the heart of the Margaret River wine region. A rare gem of a site with gravelly gentle north facing slopes, high on the ridge, receiving the cooling influence of the Indian Ocean sea breeze and the cool Nor Easterly across Geographe Bay. Respected winemaker and owner, Michael Kerrigan is making fresh and vibrant wines from this iconic vineyard. Kerrigan has lifted the quality of the wines to reflect the outstanding vineyard site.

Hay Shed Hill

One of the ‘Best of the Best’ Wineries and 5/5 red stars
James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2011-2012

“Among the pioneering Margaret River vineyards, Hay Shed Hill’s original vines were established in the early 1970s. The Morrisons purchased the property in 1989 and developed it into a very respectable 18 hectare estate. They sold it in 2000 to a wine investment group after which focus and quality went through a difficult patch. Winemaker Michael Kerrigan took over the property in December, 2006 and set about restoring the original vineyard’s glory. His emphasis is on producing purely 100% estate grown wines. With four vintages now under his belt, the impressive fruits of his labor are demonstrated in this line-up.”

Hay Shed Hill ‘Block 2’ Cabernet Sauvignon

95/100 points, Cellaring: 10 years, “(…) I believe this is the best cabernet Kerrigan has made from Hay Shed Hill. (…).” (2009 vintage)
“This is sourced from some of the oldest vines in Margaret River. I believe this is the best cabernet Kerrigan has made from Hay Shed Hill. So elegant and stylish yet at the same time has the power and intensity that is evident in Margaret River. Wonderful balance of oak, tannins and fruit. A wine for extended cellaring.”
Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2012

One of the ‘Best of the Best by variety’: ‘Best of Cabernet Sauvignon’, 95/100 points (2009 vintage)

“Block 2? There’s absolutely nothing second about HSH’s number one Cabernet. Layered with lingering red and black berry fruits, tobacco and coffee oak and gravelly tannins, it needs years to unravel.”
Tyson Stelzer, Wine100, May 2011

91 + /100 points (2009 vintage)
“(…) an immediately impressive wine for its blokey appeal but freshness of fruit. Sure, its a bigger version of Cabernet from a region that touts many styles, but this wine shows a finer, elegant triumph underpinning the wine, albeit with notable oak and forward fruit presence.  That being said, this isn’t monstrous, but it is bigger in flavour – classic cassis, black fruits, olive tapenade and anise, but the bright acidity brings it back around. The force and drive will appeal to many; the prominent oak presence a boon for the stave enthusiast, but, for me it’s a little overdone in this regard. That being said, it does shout from the region and have a slippery, readily drinkable feel, so that’s a plus.”
Mike Bennie, The Winefront, March 2011

Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Sauvignon

93/100 points (2009 vintage)
“(…). It’s a perfect drinking cabernet. Serious but accessible. It’s all dust and bramble, sweet blackcurrant and gravel. Eucalypt plays a handy role too. I love the smell and the taste but what I particularly admire is the way the fruit lingers through the finish. It gives the wine a delicious lilt. Great value, this. Drink: 2013 – 2019.”
Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, www.winefront.com.au, July 2011

93/100 points (2009 vintage)
Bargain Margaret River! Now there’s a line you don’t hear often! Definition, concentration, restraint, gravelly texture, crunchy acidity, cool red fruits and rose perfume. It’s got a decade in it, too!”
Tyson Stelzer, WBM, 2011

Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot

“Get the Hay Shed ThrillRevel in the exquisite delights of a truly delectable Margaret River cabernet merlot.” (2010 vintage)
“Some things just seem so exquisitely right. Everything in the right place and in the right proportions. The Hay Shed Hill cabernet merlot is what I would term an exquisitely right wine. Let me explain. This is a very popular blend in Margaret River in particular, where it excels as a quality blended red consistently punching above its weight. But often it is not much more than a fruit bomb – with obvious exceptions.  In this case, winemaker Michael Kerrigan has created a superbly elegant and stylish wine with a degree of sophistication normally associated with the best examples of this blend. It has a controlled linear structure and persistent fruit flavours that carry effortlessly to a long finish.  Everything just seems to work together as it should and the result is a super wine offering tremendous value.”
Ray Jordan, The West Australian Newspaper, Fresh, October 2011

Hay Shed Hill ‘Block 1’ Semillon Sauvignon Blanc

93/100 points, Cellaring: 9 years (2010 vintage)
“This is an outstanding example of Margaret River blended white. The use of a small amount of oak has augmented with tightly wound fruit and created a lean and angular palate of great penetration. Very complex with the potential to develop with extended cellaring.”
Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2012

94/100 points, 5 glasses, ‘Special Value’ (2010 vintage)
James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2012

Hay Shed Hill Semillon Sauvignon Blanc

90/100 points, Cellaring: 3 years, “(…) So good as a current drink.” (2011 vintage)
“Bursts out of the blocks with a crunchy lively fresh tropical character. Lots of herbs and gooseberry with a generous splash of lime juice.  Passionfruit sweetness on the palate contributes to its bright fresh lines. So good as a current drink.”
Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2012

Hay Shed Hill ‘Block 6’ Chardonnay

94/100 points, Cellaring: 7 years
“This is a single vineyard chardonnay from Hay Shed. Has a spicy minerally and subtle grapefruit character on the nose. It’s a very fine and almost delicate chardonnnay yet there is admirable power that targets a precise long finish. A very expressive and interesting wine.”
Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2012

Hay Shed Hill Chardonnay

94/100 points, Special Value (2010 vintage)
“Light straw-green; free-run juice from estate-grown grapes gives the wine a head start before fermentation in French barriques followed by 11 months maturation in those barrels. The wine has elegance and finesse, with a zesty grapefruit and pear finish.”
James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2012

Fine value, 4 out of 5 stars – a cut above (2010 vintage)
“Margaret River’s renown with the production of chardonnay prompts a few questions about this wine – varietal character, regional character, house style? Here there’s plenty of fruit to begin with – grapefruit and old-world ginger jam – followed by a gingernut biscuit spice that entwines with citrusy zest flavours. It’s punchy, crunchy, fresh and just teeters on the edge of leanness, but it’s most engaging as it finds its balance. Food: Scallops with ginger.”
