Frankland River, Western Australia
ferngrove.com.au

Ferngrove was founded by South Coast cattle farmer, Murray Burton who believed Frankland River’s ancient soils combined with maritime climate and cooling Indian and Southern Ocean breezes would produce world class wines…he was right. Ferngrove has invested in a world-class production facility and handpicked a team of talented and passionate winemakers and Viticulturists, led by Chief Winemaker Kim Horton. In its short history, Ferngrove has received international acknowledgement and outstanding reviews from some of the world’s leading wine journalists including James Halliday, Oz Clarke, Huon Hooke, Robert Parker, Jeremy Oliver and Jancis Robinson.

The ‘Symbols’ range embodies the essence of Ferngrove’s finest quality, yet at a price point that makes them an affordable pleasure of everyday moments. The wines are fresh, flavoursome and distinctly easy drinking styles that are enjoyable to drink.

The aim of the ‘Frankland River’ range is to bring forth the varietal characters distinctive of the Frankland River region. The wines are reflective of their site, soil topography, vineyard management and vintage conditions…true to fruit and character.

‘Orchid’ is Ferngrove’s flagship range made from premium parcels of estate grown fruit and each named after a native rare orchid that only grows in the South West region of Western Australia. Made for style, elegance and complexity, these wines are the ultimate expression of the vintage and variety made for that special occasion.

‘The Stirlings’ epitomises excellence in fruit quality and varietal expression. It is always the ultimate regional expression of a particular vintage so the varieties may vary but the result is a full flavoured yet elegant wine with great cellaring potential.

“It would be easy to get caught up in a pile of superlatives when describing what Ferngrove achieve each year on year. From the affordable Symbols range to the flagship red wines, it’s a story of exceptional quality, elegance, consistency and value. Two of the most exciting wines in the preparation of this edition have been the 2008 Merlot and the 2007 King Malbec – the exact taste of which I can recall months later. If there’s anyone out there doing what Ferngrove does but better, I want to know who they are!”
Jeremy Oliver, Australian Wine Annual 2010

‘Symbols’ Cabernet Merlot

92/100 points, Special Value (2008 vintage)
“(…) full of exuberant blackcurrant, redcurrant and plum fruit, the tannins soft and ripe; I suppose oak is there, but it’s subtle. Great bargain. (…).”
James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2011

‘Frankland River’ Chardonnay

92/100 points (2009 vintage)
“A restrained combination of nectarine and melon, with the well-handled spicy oak providing complexity; the palate is quite unctuous, while remaining light and fresh; builds with power and is evenly balanced to conclude. (…).”

‘Frankland River’ Shiraz

91/100 points (2008 vintage)
“Bright mid garnet; the bouquet is a spicy combination of red fruit, fresh leather and a touch of roasted meat; medium-bodied with fleshy fruit on the mid-palate giving way to savoury tannin and a mineral complexity that is quite appealing; fresh acidity cleans up the finish with style. (…).”

‘Orchids’ ‘Cossak’ Riesling

Gold Medal and Top of its class (2010 vintage)
Royal Melbourne Wine Show 2011

‘Orchids’ ‘Majestic’ Cabernet Sauvignon

4.5 glasses “(…) very likeable…” (2009 vintage)
“The Frankland River district can produce beautifully delicate red wine styles, and this cabernet has a few more savoury edges than many.  It starts quite perfumed and while the fruit is ripe with typical blackberry flavour this wine has a poised, medium to fuller bodied weight, some flesh on the palate, and finishes well.  It’s very likeable and will open up with air and years.”
Tony Love, The Daily Telegraph, November 2011

92/100 points (2008 vintage)
“(…) intensely scented of black currant and blackberry with supporting notes of mocha, cedar, tobacco, damp dirt and smoked duck. (…). Approachable now, it will be best drunk 2012 to 2020+. (…).”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate, October 2010

‘The Stirlings’ Cabernet Shiraz
